The Process

Our Proven Pool Building Process

At Atlas Pools & Spas, we believe every successful project starts with a clear, structured process. From the first design consultation to the finishing touches, we guide homeowners in Los Angeles, Beverly Hills, West Hollywood, and Orange County through each stage with transparency and precision. Our goal is to make building your custom pool or outdoor living space simple, stress-free, and enjoyable — while delivering the highest quality craftsmanship.

1. First Meeting Consultation

No cookie-cutter kidney-bean pools here! Every project is custom. So, we’ll start with an onsite meeting. If you already have plans, we’ll prepare a detailed bid and skip to #3! If you don’t have plans yet, we’ll learn about your vision for your yard and your dream pool, taking into account how you want to use the space, entertain, or enjoy peace and tranquility in your own sanctuary. We’ll take measurements and photos and discuss options and features in line with your wishes and budget.

2. Design Concept

Using 3D software, our designers will create the perfect oasis capturing your dream space, including the features and options that fit your needs and vision. Once approved, plans are finalized for HOA approval, permits, and construction plan sets.

3. permits

Our team has it covered- we’ll handle all soils engineering, pool and structural engineering, and permits. We’ll also cover all safety steps before we start including Dig Alert, and all inspections for the City/County to ensure your pool is perfect!

4. Layout & Excavation

The shape and position of your pool is defined for your approval, and excavation begins!

5. Steel, Plumbing & Electrical

Your pool is now ready for a steel grid that will be installed according to the engineering requirements for your specific pool shape, size, and yard conditions. We’ll use Schedule 40 PVC plumbing for your pool, motor, and water features.  Electrical conduit will be run for energy efficient equipment, LED lights.

6. Shotcrete

This is the structural shell of your pool. Our pool shells exceed the minimum requirements. We always use 4500 PSI shotcrete to provide a tough, durable shell meant to last.

7. Coping, Tile, & Decks

Glass tile? Stone coping? Porcelain Pavers? We do it all! This step brings together the design and materials that style your pool. Our masonry crew will continue creating the backyard with precision and detail to your finishes and designer touches.

8. Equipment

We’ll install the pumps, filter, heaters, and a control system to make operating and enjoying your pool a breeze. We’ll custom-program your system to be controlled from a phone or ipad, allowing you to easily turn on the spa from anywhere, start or stop water features, change light colors, or increase your filtration time – all with the touch of a button.

9. Surfacing & Final Touches

Whether you decide on plaster, quartz, or pebble, we offer a variety of colors and textures to complete the look of your pool. Once the application is complete, we’ll fill the pool and begin circulating the water to cure the surfacing. Our technicians will apply a UV protective coating on all exposed plumbing, label all pool equipment, start up your pool and balance the water chemistry, and provide you with an orientation to operate and enjoy your new pool.

10. Jump In & Enjoy!

Your pool and yard is an extension of your home and lifestyle, and ready for whatever you have planned! Spend the weekend swimming, invite friends to BBQ in the outdoor kitchen, catch some sun and a poolside nap. You can relax—not only do you have a high quality custom project with no detail overlooked, you also have one of the best warranties in the industry.

Construction Process FAQs

We know building a pool is a big investment, and many of our clients in Laguna Niguel, Newport Beach, Mission Viejo, and the greater Los Angeles area have questions before getting started. That’s why we’ve put together answers to the most common concerns about pool design, construction timelines, financing, and maintenance. Use this section as your quick guide — and remember, our team is always available to provide detailed support.
How long does the building process take?

Depending on the extent of your project, a new pool takes approximately 8-12 weeks from the time permits are issued.

When is the best time to install a swimming pool?

The best time to build a pool is now! A swimming pool and spa offer year round enjoyment in Southern California, and the sooner you start your project, the sooner you will be enjoying it with your family and friends!

I already have plans from another designer- can you use those?

Yes! We work with several landscape designers and architects and build their designs! Plans can be emailed to info@atlaspoolsinc.com, and we’ll contact you for an onsite meeting.

Do you offer financing?

Yes! For more information or to start your application visit our financing page.

Will a pool increase the value of my home?

Most studies show that in Southern California, a pool will increase the value of your home, depending on where your home is located. Consult with your realtor for specifics on how adding a pool may contribute to your home value or increase its rental value.

What about warranties? Is my investment well-protected?

Warranties are very important. At Atlas Pools, Inc., we offer one of the best guarantees in the swimming pool industry. We are confident in the product we build and we offer a warranty that backs it up. A warranty is only as good as the company that issues it. Dozens of pool builders go out of business each year. If they’re gone, so is your warranty. We’ve been in business since 1996 and warranty all our own work.

How much work is involved in owning and caring for a swimming pool?

In the past, pool maintenance was somewhat of a chore. But with today’s technology and conveniences, owning a swimming pool is easy! Pre-programmed filtration and heating can all be automated. Automatic pool cleaners and various sanitizing devices also make your pool simple to maintain. Atlas Pools will start up your pool so you can begin enjoying it right away, and connect you with a trusted service company for weekly maintenance.

Should I consider building my own pool as an owner/builder?

No. Even the experts encounter challenges during pool construction. Years of experience, knowledge, and specific training lead to effective solutions that produce our superior quality finished products. And remember, it can be very difficult (if not impossible) to manage your warranties without a General Contractor. We have been called on many times to finish a pool started by an owner/builder or to correct costly mistakes made by sub-contractors who would not honor their warranties. I have a very small yard. Can I still have a pool?

Yes! Our design team has created amazing pools and outdoor spaces in yards large and small. They can work with the most challenging properties. You’ll be surprised by our innovative solutions that can turn your dreams into a beautiful backyard resort. Before you give up on your impossibly small yard or hillside location, call us for a free consultation and we’ll discuss ways to turn your yard and dreams into plans!

Do pools contribute to the drought?

Water agency studies have proven that residential swimming pools require considerably less water to maintain than the grass they replace. Plus, the backyard will soon become the new favorite spot for the family to hang out together!

How should I decide on the design of my pool?

Each property has unique features that should be considered when your pool is being designed. So does your family! We’d love to meet with you at your home to discuss your pool needs and desires. We will ask you how you intend to use your pool. Is exercise important? How about family use? What about location? Where will the pool look best when viewed from your home? Our design team will consider the variables of your unique yard and prepare a custom design to maximize function, beauty, and create your dream space.

Are there any additional options available to add to my pool?

Of course! As a custom pool builder, we design and build exceptional spaces. Pools with glass walls, fire bowls, fire walls, deck jets, light shows, underwater windows. Tell us your desire and we’ll make it happen!
